Telegram is cross-platform instant messaging software with free and open source software on the client side. It was founded in 2013 by Russian brothers Nikolai Durov and Pavel Durov, who also founded the well-known Russian social networking site vkontakte. Telegram said in March 2018 that it had reached 200 million monthly active users. Users can exchange encrypted and self-destructing messages with each other (similar to "read-and-burn") and send all types of files such as photos and movies. Officially, Telegram offers a variety of clients for mobile (Android, iOS, Windows Phone), desktop (Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux) and web, it also has an open application programming interface (API), so there are many third-party clients to choose from. Telegram launched the paid Telegram Premium with a price tag of $4.99 per month. Subscribing to Telegram Premium gives you access to premium stickers, no sponsored ads will be displayed on the channel.

 

It divides the chat into two types. First, the "General chat" mode, which uses end-to-end encrypted communication, but the server will have access to the key and can log in via multiple devices. Second, the "Secret chat" mode, which uses end-to-end encrypted communication and can only be logged in from two specific devices.

 

Officially, when two users are communicating, no third party can access the users' communications including administrators. When users are chatting in secret, the messages contain multimedia that can be designated as self-destructing messages, which are automatically destroyed within a specified period of time after the message has been read by the user.
